It’s hard to believe that just 10 years ago, Unity was an idea. A distant vision over the horizon that only a kid with a dream could see. Ironically enough, it’s a fundamental truth of life that dreamers are just crazy loners until they have the crew that wants to sail into the abyss that is the unknown.
Those who know me know I love One Piece. Not just because it is a beautifully crafted masterpiece, but because it is the most honest analogy I have found for the journey of Unity. We are a crew of misfits – each of us carrying unique talents, hard-won scars, and a particular kind of determination – sailing toward something most people would call impossible. Even now, as I'm writing this, I am reminded of a quote that I saw every day of my childhood...
"Talent hits a target no one else can hit; genius hits a target no one else can see.”
That unshakeable belief in each of the people who join this crew, and the unwavering confidence in charting a new course, one that some call crazy, is what makes us a different kid of pirate: The ones who chose adventure over comfort. The ones who will leave every island on this adventure better than we found it.
And like any good adventure, the early days were anything but easy.
