About Social Skills Groups

Social Skills are critical to any kiddo's development. For those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, developing these skills is one of the hardest tasks.

All kiddos at Unity Behavioral Services have programs related to social skills and navigating group settings. Through structured group sessions, children practice essential skills like communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution in a supportive environment.

Why are Social Skills
Important?

Enhancing Communication

These skills help children express themselves more effectively while understanding others.

Fostering Relationships

Social Skills help kiddos expand their often limited relationships and navigate those relationships more effectively.

Real-Life Application

These skills, when practiced in a controlled environment, help kiddos confidence and experience in everyday interactions.

What to Expect From
Social Skills Development

1. One-on-one Development
2. Tailored Group Sessions
3. Role-Playing Activities
4. Guided Peer Interactions
5. Parental Involvement

One-on-one Development

Before joining a group, each kiddo will work one-on-one with their therapist to practice key skills based on their specific needs. This provides a foundational set of skills for group therapy sessions.

Tailored Group Sessions

Groups are carefully composed of children with similar social skill levels and goals. Sessions are designed to address the specific needs of the group, ensuring that each child benefits from the interactions.

Role-Playing Activities

Role-playing is a key component of our social skills groups. Kiddos participate in scenarios that mimic real-life situations, allowing them to practice and reinforce the skills they are learning in a safe and supportive environment.

Guided Peer Interactions

Kiddos are encouraged to interact with their peers during sessions, with guidance from our therapists. This hands-on approach helps them develop critical social skills, such as turn-taking, active listening, and empathy.

Parental Involvement

We involve parents by providing regular updates on their child’s progress and offering strategies to reinforce social skills at home. This collaborative approach ensures that the skills learned in the group translate into relationships with siblings, parents, and extended family.

After the Group Therapy

Upon completing Group Therapy, our team will work with you to find communities for regular practice and engagement.

Like many of the skills developed during ABA therapy, social skills require regular practice and engagement. Finding a group where social skills are regularly practiced, reinforced, and expanded upon ensures your kiddo does not lose these skills and habits over time.
